The ultimate music playlist for power linemen

For Huskie Tools

Linemen work hard for a living, and the work can be stressful and exhausting. No matter who you work for or where you live, we can all agree that we deserve a little “jam out” time once in a while.

Maybe you’re the type who likes to crank the tunes while driving to the job site, or maybe you prefer the after-work kitchen dance session with the whole family. Maybe you’re the jukebox DJ at your local watering hole. Whatever your preference, we’ve got you covered with this playlist of epic songs that linemen can really groove to.

1. T.N.T. – AC/DC

We could’ve filled this entire playlist with AC/DC songs. After all, the band reportedly picked their name after the founding members’ older sister saw the initials AC/DC on a sewing machine, a reference to alternating current/direct current. But we had to choose “T.N.T.” because it really rocks and can definitely get you feeling loose after a long day of work.

2. Rocket Man – Elton John

Who can resist singing along to “Rocket Man” by Elton John? While it’s not totally relatable to the lineman experience (it’s about a lonely astronaut), we do like the line about “burning out his fuse up here alone.”

3. All of the Lights – Kanye West, ft. Rihanna, Kid Cudi

We decided to go a little bit more modern with this next song because the title really says it all. “All of the Lights” is a peppy, upbeat song by Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi) with a great chorus that’s all about what we do every day as linemen — keep the lights on. Sing it loud and proud: “Turn up the lights in here baby. Extra bright, I want y’all to see this.”

4. It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere – Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett

No question, being a lineworker is one of the best jobs in the world. But of course, it’s still a job. So when it’s almost quitting time or you’re thinking about heading to happy hour, crank the volume on the Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett song “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” to get in the mood to relax.

5. Electric Avenue – Eddy Grant

OK, it’s pretty obvious why we had to add this one to the list. But beyond the title and the chorus line that says “We gonna rock down to Electric Avenue,” this funky hit is easy to jam out to, any time of day.

6. Start Me Up – The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones probably didn’t write this song with lineworkers in mind, but they should have. After all, people need power to “start up” all their devices, tools, toys and household appliances.

7. Electric Feel – MGMT

Read the lyrics of this pop-rock song by MGMT and you’ll see they’re all about electricity (as it relates to romance, of course). It’s catchy and fun and it might just get stuck in your head. You’ll be singing “Turn me on with your electric feel” all the way up and down those utility poles tomorrow.

8.  Takin’ Care of Business – Bachman-Turner Overdrive

What do we do all day as linemen? We take care of business. People everywhere need our help to keep the lights on and the power flowing, whether they realize it or not. We get stuff done. End of story.

9. You’re the One That I Want – Grease

OK, OK, so maybe you’re not really into musical theater. But allow us to explain why “You’re the One That I Want” made our playlist. In case you forgot (or it’s been a while since someone dragged you up on stage for a karaoke duet), the first lines of the song are all about electricity: I got chills, they’re multiplying. And I’m losing control, ‘cause the power you’re supplying … It’s electrifying!” Plus, it’s just a darn fun song.

10. Dancing in the Dark – Bruce Springsteen

Without lineworkers, everyone would be dancing in the dark, not just The Boss. ‘Nuff said.

11. Electric Boogie – Marcia Griffiths

Forget all that new “cha cha slide” stuff. This is one of the original songs for dancing the “electric slide” at weddings and parties. Plus, as soon as you turn on this upbeat song by Marcia Griffiths, you’ll immediately be transported back to the early 1980s. Mullet, anyone?

12. The Power – Snap

Go ahead, turn that volume knob all the way up. “The Power” by Snap is pure fun. This song has it all — a rocking bassline, that special 1990s style of rap and soulful female vocals. Plus, it’s all about power.

13. Working for the Weekend – Loverboy

Last but not least, we had to throw this awesome early 1980s hit into the mix. Because aren’t we all really “Working for the Weekend” when it comes down to it?
